Action

– Dante Alighieri, De monarchia I, XIII –

According to Hannah Arendt, action is the prerogative par excellence of humans – that is the outcome of their nobler discretion – to act. It is different from “doing” because the sense of action does not necessarily lead to productivity.
As such, action derives from the autonomous and constitutive power of the subject and it has the community as referent.
To accomplish an action it is necessary to declare oneself verbally and publicly as the agent of that action.
Only if these conditions are satisfied, action states who the subject is, and therefore it is recognized by the Animal Spirit, the demon who lives in the heart of humans. Then “word and action are a second birth, through which we confirm and assume the bare fact of our physical appearance”.
