INTERSPECIES DIPLOMACIES

Responding to the ecological crisis as the 20th century drew to a close, Interspecies Diplomacies (IDs) draw their name from etymology, defining the art of bending or contorting between worlds, languages, cultures, and bodies. This emphasizes the inherent need for those who practice diplomacies to change their “position” and habits. In broader terms, IDs embody the institutionalization of diverse knowledge, disciplines, relational modes, rituals, practices, norms, and ways of life. Their overarching objective is to continually negotiate and establish relations of coexistence and cohabitation among humans, other-than-human living beings, and more recently, even non-living entities.

Throughout the first half of the 21st century, IDs gained global recognition, initially through individual initiatives and later institutionalised in schools and cenacles. This network has become an integral part of Earth’s cultural and political landscape, ultimately contributing to the establishment of enduring multispecific cooperation strategies in numerous territories.
